A rumor for now, but I think it’s likely true. What happens to conference cross-country? Hard to see it happening if football is canceled.

This is almost assuredly the first domino to fall. No College Football in the fall, and likely you'd think no Fall sports in general.
big 12 also
Their talking about having it in the Spring, but it could be even worse by then, I kind of think the Tokyo Olympics rescheduled for 2021 will be cancelled as well AGAIN. What if it takes 5 or more years for a Vaccine that has no negative side effects to be created? At some point we have to get back to normal. I have great trust that the people in charge will do the right thing as they have our best interest's at heart.
Old Dominion University cancelled all Fall 2020 sports just a few minutes before the Big Ten made their decision.
Said decision was made after conversations with coaches, athletes and local/state health officials.
Big Ten opting out really ends any hope for a fall college football season in 2020.
I honestly can see the SEC being the last stronghold as let's be honest, there isn't much going on in most of those states other than college football.
Why don't they just put the players on a daily regimen of hydroxychloroquine and give it a go?
So it's rumor but your title says it's been cancelled.
Thanks for being misleading.
Let us know when the B10 actually has a press release saying they are cancelling football.
btw, if football is cancelled all fall competitions in all sports will be cancelled.
It’s been reported by the Free Press and Dan Patrick that the college presidents informally voted 12-2 to postpone the season. The semantics are over whether that is malleable. It is likely that this was a trial balloon leaked vote to see media/public/student-athlete reaction. The Big Ten’s official move will come shortly. Could the backlash by many, including the President, change some minds? We’ll see, but the logistical challenges are daunting.
The PPP loan came through. The powers that be are still getting paid...which is all that matters...to them.
So what, college presidents don't have the final say in the matter?

Only by official appearances.
But hey, at least this spares the Buckeyes another embarrassment in the playoff at the hands of Clemson, Oklahoma, or an SEC power.

This is a question I keep seeing asked and ignored every single time. Are people really willing to let go of sports, recreation, travel, entertainment, etc for years on end if this turns out to be the case? Those things aren't worth losing lives? Fair enough. What about in-person school? It's one thing to give that a go for another semester or year, but year after year after year? One of my local districts, no joke, came out today and said they would be on a hybrid until the pandemic was over. What does that even mean? That could be years.

When has Ohio State ever been embarrassed in the playoff (or in the BCS in earlier years) by Oklahoma? For that matter, when has anyone been embarrassed in any playoff by Oklahoma? Oklahoma won the BCSCG for the 2000 season (January 2001), but is 0-7 in BCSCGs and CFB playoff semifinals since then.
They are worried about being sued. This has nothing to do with whether college kids are safe, whether they are less or more at risk, or anything to do with player safety.
They are worried that they will be sued either individually or as a massive class action suit.
I don't know why people keep thinking that we're magically going to put the genie back in the bottle.
It was pretty clear months ago that this virus would criss cross the globe and mutate multiple times and then stay with us forever.
https://www.npr.org/2020/08/09/900490301/covid-19-may-never-go-away-with-or-without-a-vaccineDid you read this article or just the sensationalized headline? The article itself argues that a combination of vaccine and herd immunity will make the virus significantly less of a threat to health in coming years--closer to the common cold. So, yes, the virus will still exist in the future, but it won't be the public health catastrophe it is right now. The virus is likely to be with us for a long time, but the pandemic will not. Wear your f'n mask.
I did read the whole article and I agree on all points. My point is that there is no timeline on when the pandemic (the disease is still deadly) will end. That's just going to be whatever it is. These vaccines coming down the pipeline are mostly a political placebo.
Trump wants them to play so college football will happen.

The actual Detroit Free Press article says all sports, not just football, will be cancelled. We'll see.
If you look at the Covid numbers in each Big-10 state, some of them aren't all that bad (e.g., Nebraska), but only one state, New Jersey, arguably has falling numbers. Most look like they are trending upwards.
Too many things would have to uniformly be done right by too many people for too long a period, IMHO, for college football at this or any level to be safe.
Remember Murphy's Law: If something can go wrong, it will, at the worst possible time.
I work in D1 Athletics at a Mid-Major. I'm not a coach but work on revenue generation and marketing. Our Football season was canceled for this season.
This is a real shame on many levels. I can tell you that a lot of these kids that play at P5 schools come from lower income areas.. They don't have access to the housing / food / weight rooms that they would get on campus. Take football out of it. These kids are BETTER off at school than going back home. These kids worked hard all year for the season and it's getting taken away from them. The kids want to play! Let them play.
Spring football most likely will not happen. If it does it will be 6 games maybe 8 . You will mix with college basketball and march madness and the TV contracts are all tied to MBB. Are you going to delay the NFL Draft since the season will most likely still be taking place around that time.
Last part. If the SEC / ACC / Big 12 are the only conferences that play. You will see other schools join them for 1 year. It's very possible you'll see schools like Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan in the SEC. If they do not. The big 10 will receive zero dollars from TV and these schools will take a MASSIVE hit. A lot of athletic directors are looking for reasons to cut non-revenue sports. I can promise you that and Nebraska coming out saying they will be 80-120 Million in the hole with no football... say goodbye to Nebraska track and field.
