A sprint athlete now did 5 hours running and 5 hours skiing on the same day to get better at long distance events. It's normal to do longer runs for skiers than for runners. Why is that?

They are interested in the aerobic benefits only. Since they are already very fit, this means they have to run for a long time. The only way to do that without the impact adversely affecting your training is to run very slowly. This is what they do, often on very soft ground like bogs.
I am not sure why they choose running rather than, say, cycling. Maybe they feel running is closer to skiing; but I suspect it is because cycling would be tougher to recover from.
10 hours is a huge days. 20-30 hour weeks are now common for elite skiers but I had not heard of 10 hours in a single day.
That said, for over distance they tend to do L1, which is low level between a hike and a jog.
Skiers, like cyclists get to rest now and then when going downhill
