China locked down hard for 3 months but people started going back to work this spring and things reopening. I refuse to believe that they have such low covid case numbers. Are they lying? Not testing?

I don't believe them either. A totalitarian state can make the official record differ from the truth. Its why freedom of the press is so important to a functioning democracy.

Are you attempting to minimize the virus in U.S? Are you using the trump line: We test, we have the most cases because we test.
U.S. is suffering excessive deaths far worse than the 160,000 plus official dead from covid-19. If you have evidence any other nation is suffering excessive deaths, demonstrate. Excessive deaths does not require a positive covid-19 test. Excessive deaths looks back at death rate in a nation over past ten years.
Hard lockdown with an obedient population = virtual elimination of covid.
I think they've had a couple of local lockdowns since to quell small local surges.
If the West had locked down harder, been more obedient and less hasty to resume travelling we would have extremely low numbers too.
I recently went to stay at my gf's parents house. When I got there (not before we left) her mother told us she had recently developed a cough. But not to worry, it wasn't covid. She had a headache but her other symptoms were mild. That can't be covid, apparently. When we told her to go get a test (which would take her all of 45 mins) she actually felt insulted and said we had ruined her days plans (she had friends coming round...).
Nevertheless she got a test and it was negative. She was smug about it. I told you so. She was also smug about the fact she had performed the self-test poorly (how can they ask you to swab your own tonsils without touching your tongue).
Now, perhaps there's people like that in China too... But I doubt that kind of attitude is anywhere near as prevalent.
You definitely want to read this report. Back in April, U.S. Intelligence sources estimated around 2.9 million cases and ~136,000 deaths. And those numbers are more than likely even higher now.

Not everyone is trying to minimize covid here in the US. Some people are genuinely curious about how other places in the world are handling it. China and their numbers are fascinating because there are so many things at play in that country and their controlling government. Nobody asked about the US numbers here. Go post that in one of the other million threads about that topic and quit being a sensitive little whiny troll who reads into things that aren't even said by the OP.

Please share where you get your number of deaths so far. We should be around 2.2 million deaths to be “on pace” for the year, although some months will be higher than others.
China's numbers are total BS. They locked down Wuhan, not the entire country. Somehow they spread the virus to the rest of the world but not the rest of their country. They just let it go. China could care less about losing a few hundred thousand or a million to the virus. This is a country currently sterilizing Muslims, they have evil leaders.
Their actions were designed to cause hysteria in the rest of the world.

Exactly why the US is not a functioning democracy anymore. More like a corporate/banking cartel. Not sure who is more believable, US or China.
+1

Also take into account the patients that were included as positives in the data sets. I know we had a lady in Springfield (MO) go in a few weeks back for a test. Filled out all the paperwork. Waited for several hours for the test and never got one. Finally had to leave without testing.
I guess she got a phone call a few days later and they told her she tested positive. She had to inform them she never even took it.
This was on the local news. One of many examples.
Some percentage of those excess deaths are attributable to the lockdown itself. For example, hospital visits for heart attacks, strokes, etc. fell off a cliff in the spring. Did people stop having heart attacks? Of course not. They just were too scared of leaving their homes to go to the hospital.

They didn't just lock down Wuhan. My coworker's family was visiting her grandma in a different part of China and they weren't able to leave for months because of the lockdown. Let me emphasize - this was not in Wuhan, and even then they weren't even allowed to leave.
COVID is not actually that complicated to contain if you are smart about it. If you lock down early and hard, test a lot, don't let people from other countries in, and shut down whenever it reappears, you'll contain it. Just because the US refuses to do that doesn't mean it isn't possible.

Don't forget all the surveillance cameras in Chinese cities. China is by far the most surveilled county in the world. (18 out of top 20 most surveilled cities in the world are in China.) I don't think people in the Western countries would tolerate that kind of intrusion.

jesus h christ. americans are so terrible at facts. its no surprise we are in such a terrible state of affairs. approximately 960 million chinese weren't allowed to leave their homes for 63 days (and some longer). one person per household was allowed, with permission, to leave for groceries once per week. grocery delivery was the default in any urban area. and you know what? they largely complied.... obviously that could never happen if china also had a fox news, breitbart, infowars, etc. and its a bad thing, generally, that they dont have a broad spectrum of voices. but it sure makes it easier to ensure the idiots in your country don't murder 160,000 people.
I spoke with an individual that lives in Beijing and he said that things there are locked down because the virus numbers started to increase again. Said that he has a job but the economy is in shambles.
You don't shut down cities of that size (25-30 million) because of just a few cases.
Of course, China's "official" numbers are not accurate. But it is true that China has just about eradicated the virus and is very much in control of new outbreaks. As evil as China can be, the Chinese people have become very adept at using technology to get around China's control over the internet and social media. That is how the stories about the Uighur concentration camps got out.
As a result of their coronavirus response, China's economy has returned to positive growth and exports are up (even with the tariffs and economic turmoil around the world).
It is now clear that the best approach to the virus on both economic and public health grounds is to shut down hard to get transmission to as close to zero as possible and then reopen slowly with significant testing/tracing and isolation to prevent new outbreaks. That allows a return to a near normal. The other option of just trying to use various social distancing measures results in waves of outbreaks that never end. The economy does not rebound because a significant segment of the population is forced to stay home due to age or commodities. And the virus kills tens of thousands and sends hundreds of thousands to the hospital.
In the US, we have opted for the worst outcomes both for health and economy. Our knee jerk notions of "freedom" and "liberty" have resulted in the US being on track to be eclipsed by China as an economic power if this mess continue on for years.
No one with an IQ above 90 actually believes China's numbers.
