i have the sl20 and boston 7 i personally find the 7 a bit better for faster stuff the SL20 seems to have just a little bit more of cushioning. i'm guessing the 7 and the 8 are basically the same

There are two versions of the Boston 8. The first version fits my foot better after some break-in stretching than does version 2. Version 1 has solid stripes while version 2 had worn appearance to the stripes. Version 2 uses Lightstrike. There is another discussion that goes into more details regarding differences. I have been wearing version 2 around the house and out walking some days but I am not confident it will break in and stretch enough to allow me to run in them without pain and blisters. So version 1 of the Boston 8 is similar to the version 7 except for different tread pattern on the outer sole and different upper material. Many don't like the upper material of version 1 of the Boston 8. It is not my favorite by it does not bother me. I think version 2 may be better regarding the upper material. I am not sure why they came out with a very different version 2 of the Boston 8 rather than just wait to introduce Lightstrike with the Boston 9. Maybe they could not introduce the 9 on time or quickly enough after ending production of the Boston 8 version 1. Maybe they wanted to introduce some changes in an intermediate model before the 9 came out with all the changes. I am happy I stocked up on version 1 of the Boston 8 when one colorway was being sold for around $40.
I think I have more miles on a pair of Boston 6 with more remaining tread than I do on my first pair of Boston 8 version 1. I suspect the changes in the outer sole may have reduced the durability. I have a Boston 7 that I have yet to add to my shoe rotation but the outer sole pattern is the same as the Boston 6 so expect the same durability. All use Continental brand of outer sole material that reportedly is very durable.
