You haven't answered my question about what are the point of workouts?
Each workout has an specific purpose.
Now, the purpose of doing workouts is to improve key physiological "aspects" (due to a lack of better word) in your body that will improve your performance. They focus specific physiological "aspects" that aren't developed (or at least not not developed as much as possible) by simply running Long Slow Distance, they also add a variety of stimulus to your training, also taking the boredom alway.
Of course there are a lot of other reasons for doing workouts like, psychological training, to simulate situations that are encountered in races, etc.
If you want to reach a decent amount of your potential you absolutely need to do workouts, even if just one per week, if that's what your body can handle, as you get used and your body adapts to it you eventually you be able to handle greater workloads without getting injured.
5miles everyday is nice in the beginning to build a base, but it won't do you much more than that. Definitely not the kind of training one will want to be doing for a whole year (of they want to improve at all)
