Yes, if you consider mountain biking, snowboarding and climbing mountains sport.

I was fat in 8th grade and my mile time was probably a little under 8(don't remember exactly from PE time trial).Throughout 9th grade, I generally started biking more eating less junk, even sometimes TTing a mile in that same middle school track. I did PE that year. By the end of 9th grade, I was still a little overweight, but my mile time was 630. Sophomore year, I did track(speed training, mainly focused on 400m). I realized I was bad at speed so I signed up for the mile to test myself. Ran 530. Did XC Junior year, low 18s 5k. Track season was pretty bad, but COVID cut that short. Right now, I'm on the cusp of breaking 5 in the mile. Definitely not talented enough to be top 7 though.
That 530 was the result of 400m workouts and speedwork, no mileage tracking. Honestly I'm disappointed that even with all the mileage, I still haven't broken 5 lol, but I guess that just comes back to my lack of speed and explosiveness.
Yet, you are still way more talented than me

Fixed that for you
How do you know if someone has running talent?

When someone answers this question, you're going to respond with how is that possible and then ask it again with a different phrasing within 48 hours. Data trying to understand what it is to be human.
You know if you have talent. You don’t

In over 40 years, it has had no impact on my life. I enjoy running so I train and try to get faster.
Only way to really know if someone has ‘talent’ is to have them train 8 years, run 20k miles and see how fast they get.
I’m not 6’ tall. My parents aren’t rich. My family is mostly obese. Had asthma as a kid. My hair was gray in my 20’s. Life is full of sh!t I can’t control. I don’t spend all my time whining about it though. I worry about what I can control.
Do you think you have talent?
I never ran track or XC.
I never went to homecoming or prom.
My life is great.
I’m not slow.
Therefore you obviously have other problems.
Look David, I'll repeat what I said to you in an old thread. If you feel like your running isn't going anywhere, then there's plenty of other hobbies out there. Lift, imo, that's less dependent on genes compared to running(however, you risk major injury if you're careless). Study your major well, get a girl or something, and move on with your life. If you see people who have common interests as you, ask them if they want to hang out or something.
david45 wrote:Did you guys play any sports before doing XC and track in high school?
Sure did! I was a soccer player up until I turned 16 and found out that there were other players that were better than me. I just didn't have enough talent or skill to make the higher level club teams. I switched to XC the fall of my junior year because I did pretty well in PE class when we had to run a mile. It was easy because you didn't need a lot of talent and running takes no skill. Workouts were hard though. I ended up getting a very small scholarship at a D1 school so was happy with that.
How did your 800m time trial go?
I bowled, played baseball, football, basketball, and was the best kickball player at my school!!
I did go 12-0 pitching in Little League with my 45 mph curveball. Top scorer in basketball grades 7-9. Averaged 180 bowling. (early 80s before reactive balls) Scored 2 touchdowns in jr high football. At 5'8" and 115 lbs, running was the logical sport to continue.
I played soccer, ran winter track, and played lacrosse freshman year at a group 3 school in New Jersey (pretty good at all 3 sports). Made varsity in all 3 - started as right midfielder in soccer, ran 4:42 in mile in track, and started as left attacker in lacrosse. After freshman year, played only soccer and ran track winter/spring - scored 40 goals in my high school career and ended up running 1:54 and 4:13.
David45, Why do you ask?
