The italian press this morning wrote about a positive test for the south african runner. Tonight he should have run a 400m in Trieste (north of Italy), but the mandatory test for Covid gave a positive result, so his debut for this new season is postponed.
He was training in Italy since 3 weeks, in his usual european training venue in Lignano Sabbiadoro , near Venice

I wonder if he was completely asymptomatic if he was still planning to run his event.

“I’m happy to be back in Gemona, which has become like a second home to me,” the Team South Africa website quoted Van Niekerk as saying.
“I’m grateful to be healthy, and I’m hoping to get in a few races if possible, as we start to prepare for a full return to competition when coronavirus restrictions allow.”
Seems he is fine. -

Seems way too early to determine that it won't affect his performance. He hasn't run a race yet, much less completed a race season. -

Come on man! The dude has been training all week and talking about how good he feels despite already having the virus. A blind man could see that it has not affected him. He has no symptoms and the only reason he can't race is to prevent the risk of spreading it to others. -
Anyone else panic when they saw the words “Van Niekerk tests positive?”
I’m relieved the positive test was “just” coronavirus haha, and wish him a speedy recovery. -

Same. I totally thought this was PEDs on first sight. -
There seems to be something of a pattern of behavior with Van Niekirk of making bad choices. First choosing to play in the rugby match where he busted his knee, and now contracting covid-19. You have to assume he wasn't being vigilant about observing social distancing and mask wearing, although there is undoubtedly some inevitable risk of contracting it during traveling. I hope he is unaffected by it and is back to 100% soon, but covid's known affect on the lungs causes concern that his career as a professional athlete could be over. I hope this is not the case, but it is a shame that he has missed so many years of competition during his prime.

He didn't have symptoms when tested, so it could have been either asymptomatic, pre-symptomatic (people are the most infectious 2 days before symptoms are noticed), or false positive.
He just got a second test come back negative, so the possibilities are the first was a false positive, the second is a false negative, or he had it and was asymptomatic and recovering between the tests (levels of virus dropping to below detection levels by the second test).

Yeah, it got me, too! -
I think I can coach him to a new world record at 800m !

when the coronavirus thing started, i was reading here that training intensively weakens your immune system to fight off coronavirus. if this is still true, then van niekerk better go into off season immediately

If I was the reigning Olympic champion and record holder I wouldn’t risk contracting a virus that affects your lungs and which little is known about the long term health implications of. What do you have to gain ? Train at home and wait for next year
If i was a fringe athlete however I’d be more inclined to that risk. -

Just stop!! We contracted it in April here in France while in full confinement. Turns out out downstairs neighbour had it and just using the same hallway to go to the trashbins was enough to contract it. We literally did NOTHING that could endanger us. Even got groceries delivered. And still got it. No clue what this guys situation was but stop with the blame for everyone who contracts it. Some do reckeless stuff but a lot of us got it purely while trying to survive. -

He claims he is healthy so it is hard to swallow that this will harm his performance. He knows his own body -

Go back up several posts and you'll see he was tested again, and came back negative. Several possibilities, and I outlined them there. -

Only thing we know for sure is that he is not sick. -
Hopefully, he'll recover quickly/without complications. Not all elite athletes do ... https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/24/sports/olympics/coronavirus-us-rowing-olympics.html

What a bloody pedantic finger-wagger. I, and half my work crew likely had it back in Feb., and we all recovered fine. It's called "living life". Our bodies, when properly cared for, actually need exposure to and infections by pathogens to keep strong immunity. The irresponsible thing is to live an unhealthy lifestyle which amplifies severity up to and including death. WVN shows no evidence of an unhealthy lifestyle.
