If our economy wasn't structured in a way that demands perpetual growth, thus would be completely fine.
But those computer programs rapidly buying and selling stocks won't like this. The only way to weather the storm is to bail out the people with the most money. ?
It beat expectations. Unfortunately this is what happens when you voluntarily shut down the world economy. The COVID deaths will be overtaken by deaths of despair and massive starvation in the third world if the ridiculous shut downs are not lifted.
So when the economy was doing incredibly well, the "5 time bankrupt reality tv host" had nothing to do with that right?
Now that we voluntarily shut it all down, he's to blame for everything.
Makes sense, moran
Donald J. Trump, 2013:
“Leadership: Whatever happens, you're responsible. If it doesn't happen, you're responsible,”
Do we have a leader in the White House, or what?
Well...that's what we get for shutting down the economy like scared rabbits. Now we're heading into the Greatest Depression.
Historians in the future will look back at this as the greatest mistake the nation has ever made. They'll even have a name for it: "The Great Mistake."
Nothing will ever be same again with the economy.
Hear it from Gerald - you better be sitting down:

Nobody claimed he had nothing to do with it. Obviously if you cut taxes and increase spending the economy will grow. Of course, it didn't grow anywhere near like what Trump claimed it would, but that's another topic.
The self proclaimed "master of debt" did the only thing he knows how to do. Spend someone else's money, starting with his old man's.
It wouldn't have cratered as badly under Hillary (or Obama, or Biden for that matter). Even Trump knows the economy does better under Democrats.
Man slams on the brakes on an interstate highway. Car comes to a screeching stop.
Imagine that?
False.
The GPD fell by 10% in Q2.
The 32.9% is an annualized number IF the recent rate of decline persisted for a full year.
But I guess 32.9% gets more clicks than the real number or 10%, so why report the truth?
And if Trump had taken the lead on the Covid response instead of, well, no need to go over all the mistakes and deliberate wrong actions (and inactions) he has undertaken, he would be getting a pass on the economy.
It contracted by 9.5% over the quarter.
You have to say annualized rate of 32.9%.
If it contracted by 9.5% for four quarters in a row it would be a 32.9% contraction over one year.
To be fair, they always use the annualized rate when listing the GDP growth or contraction.
But it does have to be worded correctly.
In the south, we did exactly what COVID deniers wanted us to do. We reopened businesses very quickly in the hopes of a V shaped recovery. The virus exploded and now, even where restrictions are extremely lax, everyone is staying home as they can. Had the US stayed shutdown through May as almost all of the experts urged, we would have had a chance to really be in control of the virus and be able reopen safely without a massive surge in cases. That was our only chance for a V shaped recovery. Now, the choice will be between basically starting from scratch and having a hard shutdown for at least 6 weeks or having 60-70k new infections every day and 1k+ die every day until a vaccine becomes available. And, in the case of the latter, the economy will still be dismal because people will stay home instead of going to work and getting sick.
The shame is that it wasn't enough to get the virus under control. We clearly needed a complete lockdown to get transmissions close to zero and resume normal life with the least interruption possible.

I gave Trump credit for not fxcking up Obama’s economy. Until he finally did Fxck it up.
Trump messed up Obama's economy?
Just like the critics who say the economy didn't move forward enough under Obama....
...who had to dig us out of the recession caused by Bush's two wars and the mortgage fiasco....
....which was caused by the failed economic policies of the Clinton/Greenspan era....
....which was inacted to move the economy forward due to the rampant inflation that came from the Reagen era and his policies....
Should I keep going?

Yep. It reminds me of the Red Sox and Dave Dombrowski.
Dombrowski spent a ton of money, sold the farm system, signed the biggest names, and yes the team got better and won a World Series. But they were really obvious moves, and now the future of the team is effed because he didn't do anything sustainable and some unexpected bad things went down (Sale/Eovaldi injuries and so on).
Trump meanwhile cut taxes, deregulated, spent crazily, and yes the economy roared and kept growing. But now when faced with a real test, he has shown that beyond the obvious he doesn't know what he's doing from a public health AND economics standpoint.
