Update on Tommy Rivers Puzey
“Don’t get dead.”
He said it all the time.
It wasn’t trepidatious or overly cautionary.
I always received it as “Have a great day. Don’t waste the gift. Enjoy the beauty. I love you.”
He finished the first round of chemotherapy.
The cancer is aggressive and so is the proportional treatment.
The medical team are in the watching-waiting-monitoring-tweaking phase.
I trust them.
They are scientists and artists doing beautiful work.
The “Food Face” is because he mentioned Bobby Flay and Anderson Cooper in the video he made from the ICU in Flagstaff.
He has always been interested in being informed. Anderson Cooper is one of many sources of information.
He also loves food. He’s a decent chef. He knows his way around the kitchen; the tools, techniques, properties, portions, and importance of presentation.
If you’re going to eat, it might as well be beautiful, delicious, and nutritious.
It’s science and art. He’s good at both.
I’m excited for him to come back and eat real food again.
His present circumstances have made all of us more thoughtful and mindful.
Those attributes we’re acquiring are coming at an extremely high price. They’re a gift he would want us to continue to develop.
“Don’t get dead.”

It's going to be touch and go with Tommy for a long time and things are still hecka precarious but he came through the first round of chemo well and with his kidneys in good shape. And his oxygen levels are now high enough his medical team is going to try to wean him off the ECMO an vent this week.

Just came across this thread, and have to say, this is a real low, even by LR standards. Most of you who replied with vile drivel here have never met the guy, or know him one iota. And without even knowing the diagnosis, you ridicule him. What the f*ck is wrong with your a$$holes?!? Why don’t you take the time to read up on his background, and see all that he’s accomplished, both in and outside the running arena?
And now he’s been diagnosed with a very nasty form of cancer. One which he may likely not survive. Those of you that posted negative crap about him, are you happy now? Feel good about your pathetic selves? Unreal.
And BroJos, if you should happen to stumble across my reply, are you guys happy with how your message board has turned out? You guys have to know who Tommy is and what kind of person he is. How can you allow some of this sh*t to get posted? I really don’t get it.
Rivs IS a genuine guy who cares more about your running, than boasting about anything he’s done. He is the real deal who would do anything for his friends. And now he’s battling for his life and incurring enormous hospital bills. He and his family deserve every penny they get from the GoFund Me account, and from the #runwithRivs project happening tomorrow thru August 9th. Do something good and help them out*. And. For those douchebags that felt the need to disparage him or his situation, I can only hope karma finds you quickly.
* I am not related to Tommy.
Agree. And that money will be needed. A friend of mine is a doctor, married to another doctor, and their child had cancer. Three years into treatment, they have paid over $325,000 out of pocket, despite having good health insurance. The bills are astronomical. They sold their home and downsized because of it.
Ha, I read it alright and I'm totally with people on supporting him and his family through this but like some others here I won't let something moronic just pass. Sorry it made you cry. Ok, not really.
Considering Tommy is a BYU grad, it seems an awfully insensitive thing to do. I don't know his current religious views, but it's likely many of his friends/family/supporters take comfort in prayer. You mocking that at a time like this is, at best, poor taste.
I recognize that you're reaching tenuously and irrationally yet I hope to God that he, his friends and family wouldn't deign to read this message board.
