We either have to accept another position (SPED or substitute) or be furloughed. When if schools resume no health or PE classes.

Because teaching Health has obviously been a fail, given the amount of non-maskers (which is beyond stunning).

Yeah right because everyone had to where masks before the pandemic.
what state is this in?
Sounds sensible. Teaching English certainly isn't an option in this scenario.
What a shame. The biggest line of defense we have against the virus, might as well put the nail in the healthy living coffin. Covid and many other conditions would be far less serious if we weren't such an unhealthy population. If the last 4 months had been spent focusing on healthy diet, obese people losing weight, and addressing the cause of our health concerns 95% of the population would be at much lower threat to COVID then they currently are. This would be far more effective at fighting the virus than these shutdowns and masks. This would also benefit our daily lives in many other ways and greatly reduce healthcare costs. Or we could just pretend having 40% body fat is normal and there is nothing wrong with it.
Health and PE classes have been useless given the epidemic of obesity in the US. Time for a change.

So you do have a choice- stay and pick up those other assignments or quit. Your not getting the boot you are choosing not to return

1) There have been massive cutbacks in PE requirements for decades.
2) What in the past constituted PE was really poor. Rather than teaching fundamental movement skills PE teachers often have activities that have kids standing around a lot and not PLAYING!
Add in the cut in recess and we have all sorts of problems.
It’s not pe classes fault, it’s bad parenting. We take our corporal punishment for the snowflakes and then those same parents don’t hold kids accountable. It leads to no motivation and what can pe teacher do when kids don’t want to work hard. Give them a sad face sticker?
The lingering effects of covid 19 (mostly due to over reaction) will be hanging around for a long time. In the meantime, our children are getting bigger. Don't worry those who are obese. The democratic party is poised to swoop in and garner more votes, I mean help some more disadvantaged people.
Big mistake to cut PE from the Schools, many people will become obese as kids instead of adults. I think they should have some Minimal Health Standards in order to Graduate High School. Maybe
Run a Mile in 7 Minutes For Boys 8 Minutes for Girls
10 Good Form Pullups for Boys 5 For Girls
100 Situps in 2 Minutes for Boys 75 for Girls
40 Pushups Good Form/full range of Motion , 25 for Girls
These are VERY REALISTIC for ANY Able Bodied 16-18 Year Old, who Exercises 60-90 Minutes A Day, 5 Days A Week, But most kids are in such pathetic shape now, probably 80% can't meet this Standard (THEY ARE UNHEALTHY)
All Jobs should have Physical Standards as well (of course Exceptions made for people with REAL Disabilities Like Paralysis, Wheelchair Bound, born without an arm etc).

Wow. Clearly you don't work with kids. I was a 4:14 miler but could never have done 10 pullups.

You're a podiatrist and asked to switch to dentistry. Of course it's your fault if you quit!

Yeah, and I was a 4:28 miler. At age 49 can still knock out 15 pull ups pretty easily. Just because you can run a fast mile doesn't mean that you have a high overall level of fitness, which is the goal of a good P.E. program. I make all my track kids do pull ups. Vaulters do a lot, distance kids do few. Almost every boy on my team (except for some of the throwers) can do 10 pull ups.
School “PE” has been a joke for decades.....good riddens.

100 sit ups in 2 minutes is a foolish standard and the test isn't healthy for your spine. I think more than 80% of HS students would NOT meet these standards. But then again I taught in NYC where as Covid has revealed, the average person is unhealthy.
Teachers were relishing teaching from home and were telling everyone to shut down in a similar fashion. Then the financial reality hits school districts that they need to cut their costs by 10%+ and teachers start getting pink slips like everyone else. Now teachers are complaining. Economics affect everyone and everything. COVID might kill .1% of the population (mostly people who are already compromised and in previous generations would likely already have been dead, but have been artificially kept alive by the latest wonder drug).
Correct, in the 70s in NY teachers didnt get this choice. Their jobs were cut.
If I were you I'd take the assignment gratefully at this time. When things get better, when parents and kids recognize the benefit of PE you'll get your position back. Be a team player.

And yet the five most obese states are all Red!
