Rupp was better than all of the current guys not named Paul Chelimo.
If Lomong beats his PR this week will you still feel the same?
Lomong's pr was in a perfectly paced 5000 and he didn't destroy the miler and lost to the guy who refused to lead a championship race. He was paced 4600m by a clearly sub 13 shape Mo ahmed.
Ironically also if I remember correctly Rupp's 12:58 was against Bekele or Gebremeskel or someone of that caliber and he was dragged to the time. Difference between him and lomong is that he has world final exploits in which he performed better. He performs better even in time trials. (rupp certified lol) 3:50, 12:58,26:44 Ben true has also had some good years but I would argue that he has almost always been a better 5k runner than lomong.
I would also put Jenkins ahead of Lomong but injury has seemed to hold him back at times but when he is healthy he always seems to be on the rise. Outside of that Lomong is a very strong runner just hasn't really seemed to ever have one true event that he is clearly better at.
Regardless I put Lomong, Mead, True all in the same tier. All good enough to have a perfect race and take it maybe 1-10 times against Chelimo.
I would be on the watch for Mcgorty, Fisher, and Hunter. Bowerman has the best training group in america so they will benefit from that but Hunter has steadily been making progress as well and we could argue that none of them are in their prime age range for 5000m just yet.
