They do that because they think it sounds hip and to subtlely put down people who pronounce it the usual way.

They're both correct in American English and pronouncing the middle i like visceral is the norm in Canadian and Australia English.
I only see that as a Canadian pronunciation in the source you reference.
The old pronunciation was declared racist and its statue got torn down.

If this got your attention how do you feel about t&f tv announcers who change pronunications of names and especially places? Many times it is in the same telecast and sometimes in the same 2 minute blurb.
I think they exhausted every possible pronunciation for Qatar...........all in the same telecast.

The other one with the media that's been weird is how so many of the media from the time he was elected called Trump Mr. Trump whereas previously they always said President (last Name) for all the prior presidents. I always found that weird.
