Anyone have experience with combining extended periods of high mileage with extended periods of backpacking?
If there are any marathons in late 2020 / early 2021 (CIM?), I'm planning to run one. In the "off-season," I usually run 70-80 miles per week and up to 100-110 in marathon training. 2:30 PR.
But in July-August I'll be gone for an extended backpacking trip. I'll be at elevation (10000'+ continuously) for four weeks, hiking maybe 15-25M each day cross-country with a 30-45lb. pack and with significant elevation changes (~600-750'/mi. on average). This sort of thing is not your average hiking experience, in terms of elevation change, terrain, and duration. But it will involve walking and climbing, not running. I'll be done about 18 weeks before CIM.
Obviously the best marathon base is lots of miles of running every week for months. I've done that for the past couple of months. But how does anyone think this backpacking will affect endurance and strength?
