Choi Suk-hyeon, 22, bronze medalist at Asian Junior U23 Championship, was found dead in her apartment. It was confirmed that it was a suicide.
Korea is incredibly competitive in athletics, and she was a victim of physical and verbal abuse, especially after underperforming in the elite national championship (dropped to 14th place after 4th place the year prior).
"Her coach was furious she had put on weight: "You have to avoid eating for three days," he said. "You promised me you would take responsibility."
Then he told her: "Clench your teeth," followed by the sound of a sharp slap."
Her coach severely abused her both verbally and physically, body shaming her, starving her, and hitting her. This is somewhat similar to what Salazar has done to Mary Cain and other athletes, but Cain was strong and got through it and found her own place in life. The Korean however, tried to seek for help repeatedly and reported the abuse and assault but was never taken seriously. I hope this truly sad event sends a message to all the abusive coaches out there, that they realize what they are doing and stop this "win at all costs" attitude. Also, authorities should listen and believe complainants, and not just ignore it.
