Elephants have no natural enemies. If there is any drought or something like this, they are dying like flies. The elephant was never an indicator of a functioning eco system. The opposite is very much the truth.
Legend has it these elpehant deaths were added to US covid-19 death totals.
Very sad to see. I got a lift through the Okavango Delta many years ago and got to see a lot of elephants and giraffes from the back window of the Range Rover where I was hidden. It sounds very much like they were poisoned and that the gov't doesn't want people to know, whether because they were involved somehow or it had to do with the auction of the right to kill elephants, which they recently had.

You are simply wrong about pretty much everything in your post.
1) Elephants do indeed have natural enemies. Lions kill many young elephants and quite a few adults.
2) The largest species in an ecosystem is always "an indicator of a functioning eco system".
Try not to post when you do not know what you are talking about.
Elephants, rhinos, and other large mammals will be extinct in the wild in Africa within 20 years due to hunting and habitat loss. Sad to see.
