What I would want to know is, the adaptation comes from how much ground you cover or from how long your body is exposed to the stress of running.
And the common way of increasing training load is by increasing distance as your pace gets faster (so you can cover more ground in the same time).
But why simply increasing the time spent running? This way will hugely increase your mileage without actually trying to increase your mileage.
