Gorham/Robbo
Females it's Orianthi and no one else is even close.
Can't believe Iommi and Tipton have only been mentioned one time so far. Hard to pick a top 5 but many of you have put up great names already. Two who haven't been mentioned are Fast Eddie Clark and Criss Oliva, RIP to both.
A couple more hats to throw in the ring, Dick Wagner & Steve Hunter.
They played together on Lou Reed's Live Rock and Roll Animal Album and in Alice Cooper's Band.
Their work with the former is among my very favorite.
Yes to Fast Eddie Clark.

Good list! I'll go:
1. Jimmy Page
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. Neil Young
4. Eddie VH
5. Gary Ritchrath (my sleeper), very underrated.
Would probably change a bit in 6 mos, except Page is always on top.
Neil young can barely play rhythm in the key of G. The Hanson boys are better guitarists than NY.
I've always thought of Neil's playing as being so bad that it's good.
Pete Townshend
Mark Knopfler
James Burton
Dick Dale
Paul Weller
Mark Knopfler is my favorite, based on his mastery of fingerpicking style, musical versatility and genius as a songwriter. But judged on looks plus talent, classical guitarist Tatyana Ryzhkova, has no equal.
Matthias Eklundh
Alex Lifeson
Buckethead
Jeff Beck
Eric Johnson
1. Django Reinhardt
2. Charlie Christian
3. Grant Green
4. Attila Zoller
5. Gabor Szabo

Not a single mention of Prince, yet? The great guitarists think he was the best guitarist.
I scrolled through the first page of this and not a single mention of Prince except for your post. That's when I realized the quality of "analysts" here.
I love Page, Hendrix, Gilmore - all the usual protagonists, but Prince is the best
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SFNW5F8K9Y"When Eric Clapton was asked "what is it like to be the worlds best guitar player" he calmly replied "I don't know - ask Prince".
End of story.

We were asked to name our favorite not a list of "best"

Since you mentioned finger picking....
I'll go with Doc Watson.

This seemed far-fetched to me so i did a little checking. Snopes claims it is False and "extremely unlikely to have made (in anything but jest)".
Link:
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/eric-clapton-quote-about-prince/The article goes on to say about Prince: "While Prince is regarded as a fine musician, he wasn’t necessarily seen as being in the top echelon of world-class guitarists by his fellow axe men. Rolling Stones‘ 2003 list of the “Top 100 Guitarists of All Time” completely omitted him (although he was came in at #33 in a later version). Clapton and Hendrix, however, regularly rank at the top of the list."
This in no way should detract from his genius, however, and certainly not from how much his followers love his music.

Thanks for sharing that, some great playing! If we are going to mention that song, though, I think we owe a nod to George Harrison for the original version. He was no slouch on guitar and that song is burned into the cultural consciousness.
All that said, like Johnny Cash took Trent Raznor's "Hurt" and made it his own, blind (and deceased) Canadian blues guitarist Jeff Healy made the definitive version of WMGGW:

Ya, that never happened. I heard that story 45 years ago about Phil Keaggy, although in the Keaggy version, the quote was usually from Jimi Hendrix. Phil got asked about so many times over the decades. It never happened, but Phil would joke that perhaps the questions was "... the shortest guitarist?" Prince was among the few who could beat Keaggy at that.
