Since the IAAF has now ratified Joshua Cheptegei record.... what’s Rhonex Kipruto planning next?
Cheptegei had taken 27 seconds off the previous 5k Road World Record set by Kenyan Rhonex Kipruto (13:18), who had actually taken his 10k Road World Record. Cheptegei lowered that 5k Road World Record with a time of 12:51 and really showed that he could answer back with the sub-13 minutes barrier. He averaged a 4:08 mile pace.
Cheptegei is now the first Ugandan to hold three world records. In 2018, he set a world record for the 15km road race and became the World Cross Country champion in 2019. His 10k Road World Record is set with a time of 26:38, which was later taken by Rhonex Kipruto in 26:24.
In 2017 Cheptegei was the silver medalist in the 10,000m at the World Championship in London. He also ran at the 2016 Olympic Games in the 5000m and 10,000m, finishing eighth and sixth respectively. He also set the Ugandan national records on the road in both the 5k (13:24) and 10k (27:46).
Rhonex Kipruto tho, dudes a BEAST too. As mentioned previous / current record holder. He also won the Peachtree Road Race, in Atlanta, Georgia, with a time of 27:01, breaking the previous course record and setting the record for the fastest 10k time ever on American soil.
