Hi guys,
I have always had a dream about running a very fast mile time, but I've never really had the time to train for it. Now thanks to COVID my schedule has been cleared up enough where I can finally train for such a brutal event. Currently, I'm in decent shape, meaning I do a mixture of cardio and bodyweight exercises around four times a week. I'm a decently athletic guy and have a soccer and track background. I did track and field for a couple of years in high school and got my 400-meter time down to mid 49. I was never a distance guy, but I've always wondered if I had the ability to run a decent mile time. To add a little background information, I once did an 800 in 2:06 during a time trial in practice. I know this time isn't great, but it goes to show you that I wasn't one of those lazy sprinters that could barely even walk a mile. However, I haven't seriously trained for track in about two years.
Anyways, I was just wondering if any of you guys have any advice for me on a training plan. I clearly have the speed at this point in time, but I'm not sure if I'm anywhere near where I need to be from an aerobic standpoint. If I had to guess my 400 time as of now, I'd probably post up a 52 or 53. This weekend I plan on going out to the track to get a baseline time of where I'm at. If I had to guess, my time trial will come in at around 6 minutes even. How many miles per week do I need to put in? I also want to add that I've never run more than maybe 4 to 5 miles at a given time. How long should my long run be?
I don't expect to break 5 minutes, but I'd rather be optimistic and have a loftier goal rather than a simpler one. I do realize that training for distance has few training similarities to the sprints, but I've never been one to back away from something so new and challenging. Thanks for taking the time to read this!
