It's because they aren't really in their 40s?
I'm in my mid 50's. After a surgery last year, I've worked my way to 5 miles at 7:30pace and I'm slowly progressing, not in a rush. It was a struggle and took months as I couldn't run due to the surgery and lost too much fitness. It's taken me since February to last week to get to that pace in a run.
As for those laughing and being insulting, well...you'll get to your 40's and 50's too, or at least you should hope you do;). Being in your 50's is no big deal, nothing to be ashamed of or the slowing down of your running pace during training or races.
The key to life, not just running, is to live it and be happy. People like Butthole Surfer want to criticize others to feel good about themselves, hence the derogatory post.
I've lost friends while I was in my 20's & 30's. Being able to run at all and being grateful to be here and healthy is HUGE. Let others wallow in their own insecurities to pump themselves up.
I've got 2 kids, they were blessed with smarts (not from me) and figured out how to live life and be happy. Butthole Surfer seems to need the approval of others and feel better than just being himself (assuming it's a male).
