Why does the college game need 30 players more than the professional game when only 11 can be on the field at one time?
Keep football, reduce its scholarship limit AND roster size to be inline with other sports:
Baseball, 11.7
Basketball 13 (also needs reduction)
Soccer, 9.9
Tennis, 4.5
Track & Field (includes XC but counted separately for Title IX compliance), 12.6
Water Polo, 4.5
The truth is, NCAA football is a developmental league operated by the colleges. It's time to defund college football and the arms race it causes.
I agree. College sports should be amateur, not a farm team for the nfl. Beyond that, its crazy that colleges would pump so much money into losing programs, including 85 scholarships. I get a down year, but consistently year after year, man.
I didn't know that basketball had so many scholarships for its small team size. 13 means some 3rd stringers are on scholarship. Its crazy to think guys on football or basketball scholarships aren't going to start until their junior or senior year, or maybe for football, never. Imagine if a track coach gave a scholarship to a guy who probably wouldn't score until junior or senior year. Most d1 teams I've heard about expect their scholarship athletes to be at a minimum scoring points at conference as a frosh, or a sophmore if they redshirt. The only exception to this is where scholarships are insanely broken up (ie the whole xc team is on half scholarship or something at a distance school).
