Maybe he just doesn't want to end up like El Guerrouj who graduated with a 1:47 PR? Runners want to build and show a strong "range" of performances over a variety of distances.
El Guerrouj could have run MUCH faster, he was ST like Ingebrigtsen (more 1500/3k/5k than 800/1500), so whatever Ingebrigtsen can run while in 3:30 shape El Guerrouj would have run ~2.0 sec faster (their 1500 PR diff is 4.0 sec).
Also works the other way round, If you think El Guerrouj could have run 1:43.50, then Ingebrigtsen should be able to run 1:45.5, or he must be considered even more ST and probably should even move to a new main event.
