Mantz ran 8:42 and Clinger 8:54. At Provo altitude. I for one am impressed. Clinger will be an all American in no time.

Clinger was 24th at NCAA xc his freshman year. He already is All American. The both ran a mile time trial the day before. Mants 4;06 something and Clinger 4:08 something at 4500ft.

Seems kind of slow, no?
HSer Cole Sprout rah 8:47 and 4:07 at higher altitude this year in TTs. HSer Easton Allred ran 8:57 in Utah as well.
Why didn't they run 3000 or 3218 meters?
Despite Casey's good showing, he was a whole 12 secs behind Mantz. Coming out of HS, Clinger had the better track record (no pun intended) vs. Mantz, and the times weren't particularly close. Clinger ran 1:53/4:02/8:44 vs. Mantz's 1:57/4:07/8:52. I don't know if I'm more impressed by Mantz's huge improvement or puzzled by Clinger's times. Clinger was a beast in XC, winning 2 NXN titles, while Mantz has come into his own during college, recently placing 4th at the NCAA XC champs.

Mantz was just out with a stress fracture for months and Clinger just took 2 years mostly off (maybe he jogged a bit, but was on a Mormon mission). Both have only been training for a few months.

They’re also early in summer training. Higher mileage, not sharp. This, combined with their layoffs, means they’ll have steep improvement curves the next few months.
Do they have to take 2 years and go away on this mission thing if you are a Mormon?
Is it mandatory/pressured into it or could they skip it if they like?
Seems weird to me these young guys taking two years off university and running to go about knocking peoples doors trying to get them to listen to their book of fairytales in some random country.

Pretty much forced into it if you want to keep going to church.
These are aerobically-inclined kids that lack the speed to make it to the next level. A slower version of Ritz.
Nico Young ran a faster 3k and then ran 10x400 even faster. He would have crushed these guys.
I don’t believe it’s required but I could be wrong. At any rate it’s worked out for a lot of other BYU guys, getting their running back on track after it.
2 things:
-8:42 seems a bit on the slow side for Mantz. I would expect a few seconds faster on an average day. He ran a 7:50 indoor 3K last year. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt given that 1) This was at altitude, 2) He is coming off a major injury.
-Clinger has bounced back very fast from his mission. He's back barely 6 months. He's already back to his HS fitness. 8:54 in Provo is comparable to his 8:44 at arcadia. This is an exceptional turnaround to fitness. Most take longer.
Didn't Drew Hunter run around 8:40 for his 3200 time trial recently? That was at sea level, and Drew's injury was much earlier than Mantz's so Drew had a lot more training under his belt.
I'm not saying it's a terrible time for Mantz. It's a great time. But It all depends on context. If he had a really good day and was tapered, fully back to fitness, He could run 8:30 even at altitude. I understand he raced the day before and probably isn't doing any true speed work at all, so given the context it's still great.
He also just ran a 3:57 at altitude though, so I figure he was just a little rusty.
With 3200 to 3K conversion and Provo’s altitude conversion it’s the equivalent of a 7:55 3K at sea level. I’d say that’s an impressive run for a time trial coming off an injury.
Interesting to see the different reactions to these time trials vs. Drew's time trials. Seemed like a lot of people were being overly critical of Hunter.

Yes. Because Hunter is a pro athlete who is paid 7 figures to run.
