Marriage and "partnerships" are similar but not the same thing. When you get married (even in the most chillaxed secular ceremonies), it means standing up in front of people you respect and taking a vow that you are going to stick with that person until one of you dies, no matter what comes. It's some hardcore sh!t. It is a bit of a gamble because "no matter what" is a big box full of some nasty stuff - BUT - it also means that poor person is going to be stuck with your broken, annoying, selfish ass until one of you dies. Was a risk worth taking for me and an investment worth making for me. But I think it's a mistake to look at it as a "partnership with paperwork".
