Things I would do differently if I got a do-over:
- work and study hard in my undergrad. I did OK but at minimum effort and at my age I wish I had built a better foundation. I worked much harder on subsequent schooling and it paid off
- paid attention to money and invested. I'm doing OK but could retire a lot more comfortably than I will
- I would never have taken up drinking in my youth. That $hit hung above my head for 30 years before I ditched it > 10 years back. It's surprised me a little bit how little difference it's made to my social life to not drink (adults don't pressure other adults to drink, generally), and how much difference it's made to my sense of well-being
- phoned and visited my parents and siblings more often. I went years only calling them every few months. They don't last forever
- when I was young and still stupid, I thought I knew more than everyone I met. I know now that was never true. Somebody around you ALWAYS knows more than you, maybe about many things
- listened to my music less loudly. Not only is my hearing fading, but I've got a helluva case of tinnitus, and that $hit don't ever go away
Things I'm glad I did and would do again:
- served my country including in a theater of active conflict. The military teaches you a lot about yourself and the world
- pursued education as often as I could. I love learning stuff. My wife let me go back to school after undergrad not once, but three times, bless her heart...
- traveled widely and often
- attended as many concerts as I could
