Sorry guys, but running simply will never be as popular as some other sports. Clumping "endurance sports" together as if they are all similar is flawed in this comparison.
The TdF is, was and will be 1000 times more popular than running.
Period.
Also should be noted, the Girl (Italy) and the Vuelta (Spain) are equally attended as the TdF within those countries.
Also, also, the Spring & Fall Classics are actually equally prestigious, and the Paris -Roubaix singularly has many millions lined up to watch and amoung riders, is as big a prize as the Grand Tours
No comparison to running sports.
Money, popularity, prestige. Cycling is the greatest "endurance sport".
