Was wondering this on my run yesterday. Given the factors that many believe make distance running unpopular:
1. not a whole lot of action occurring for most of the race,
2. takes a long time to watch,
3. Average people can't really relate to times that they deem to be inhuman (how many times have you been asked your 5k PR where someone responds "WOW! that's like under 5 minutes a mile!"?)
4. The athletes are skin and bones, which the average woman isn't attracted to and the average man isn't impressed by
5. Etc..
Yet cycling takes many days and many hours to watch. Lance Armstrong was skin and bones just like Galen Rupp, but he dated celebrities for god's sake, and was worshipped by the likes of ESPN and Sports Illustrated at his peak, and won and was nominated for numerous ESPY awards.
I know his absolute dominance was certainly a factor, but I can't help feeling that if the US had a 5k/10K/Steeplechaser abolutely demolish the competition in Olympics and World Championships of track over a long time period, they would still hardly be promoted or known by the sporting world.
