What would be the difference in training effect between doing a 2400m time trial at current 3200m race pace versus doing a traditional workout like 8x800m with equal time rest? What would you get more benefit from? OR similarly a 1200m time trial at one mile race pace versus 8x400m. All of these workouts seem very similar in difficulty but the time trials take much less time to complete, is there a fundamental difference in physiology between these workouts? Why is more volume generally always considered better? In the case of marathon training it would be different, more volume makes more sense, time spent on feet is much more critical because the musculoskeletal system and fuel sources have to be strong enough to put up with running for 2-3 hours. However in the case of shorter races I am puzzled to why the common approach is to do race pace intervals that total in quantity about twice the distance of the race. Why not do an abbreviated time trial and then pull a Tinman and do a short tempo before and some faster 150s or 200s after? Thanks for entertaining my questions, looking for some serious responses here.
