Hobby jogger here, training for my third marathon marathon this fall (marine corps, but I'm sure it'll be cancelled...) Two years ago ran Wineglass at 8:06/mile pace, then last year (Philly) was cruising along in the 7:50's and then hit the mother of all walls at mile 20. I know, how cliche'....This year, I want to take another crack at running a marathon at sub 8:00 minute pace. Last year I did a lot of tempo work at faster than marathon pace, like 7 or 8 mile tempo runs in the 7:40's, thinking that running them faster than goal pace of 7:50's would make 7:50's feel easy on race day. It did not work out. So this year, should I do marathon pace tempo work like I did last year, at faster than goal pace or should I do them at actual goal pace of 7:50's, or actually at current marathon pace ability, like somewhere in the low 8:00's? Also, should I do long tempo's, or break them up into tempo intervals, like 3x2 miles or 3x3 or something like that?
Just some background - 39 years old, started running 4 years ago. 6'2" and 190 lbs, kinda big! Last year maxed out at 56 miles per week, this year would like to get into the low 60's. Just ran a 19:58 virtual 5k last week, half marathon PR last April 1:31:58.
