Probably just because you peak big in cross, and don't race the mile when it matters in track
those are weird times. 800 a lot more impressive than the 1600, and the 1600 seems slow for the 5k time
Weird range indeed, but it can still be explained physiologically, assuming he is mentally strong and raced all 3 distances all-out (many 800m runners can't endure the constant suffering of a 5k, and many 5k runners can't tolerate high lactate levels of a 800m).
- good basic speed
- high lactate tolerance
- low VO2MAX
- strong endurance/threshold/stamina
That would explain the mile being worse than the 800m and 5k. It could also be that he neglected mile-pace too much in training and is not efficient at that pace.
