I've got some old college roommates who have been asking me for advice the last couple of years as they got into running. A lot of them played other sports growing up. I wouldn't say any of them were unhealthy but they hadn't been doing a whole lot of exercising.
Most of them are running 2-4 times/week & going for 3-5 miles at a time. Pace usually in the 7:30-9:00 range. One of them ran a 6:40 mile last week after a couple years of 10-20 miles/week.
You gotta remember if you're not doing workout and not putting in mega miles you probably rarely run sub-7:00 miles. Clearly the 6:40 guy can run a lot faster but most people are happy doing their own thing. His 6:40 hurt as much as it does when I run sub-5.
