I was running with a former teammate this last week and we were talking about our college training. He dropped on me that he skipped a TON of training in college that was on our own. He skipped every Sunday run, every Thursday run, and every double. All in, he skipped like 28 miles a week during track season, and 35-ish during cross. He would run every summer and winter for like 60 miles a week, but once workouts started, he would drop to roughly 45 miles a week. He says its because he hated running where our school was at. He also skipped all of the strength training for those days. It got me thinking a lot about how good he was and how good he could have been had he run what he was supposed to and stayed healthy.
Guy ran 1:51, 3:50 in the 1500, like 14:50 in a road 5k during the summer off of just normal summer running and 25:30-ish on a difficult cross course. How fast do you think he would have been with roughly 30 more miles a week of easy running?
