This is probably a question that anonymous strangers can't answer with any accuracy. You must have had some serious injuries to cause a 3 year hiatus due to injuries. I would guess that the injuries will be a more important factor in your future performance than anything else, and we don't even know about the injuries.
You really hit the bull's eye! It wasn't something so serious that I had to go under the knife. But it's really insidious (GTPS), and it took me (and I'd seen several orthos in that time frame) a couple of years to figure it out. After 7-8 months of persistent strengthening from the hip all the way down the kinetic chain(I have splayed feet, but it's gotten much better now after working on strengthening my feet and ankle), I could finally lace'em up, and now I'm currently running 30 mpw mostly pain free. (peak mileage was 50-60mpw) Still not 100%, but it just gets better and better every few days.
Additional infos: 32-year-old, male. That 34-min 10k was run after nearly 2 years of training.
