Yes. He will hold back to run a 13:29. He is ready for 13:15 but don't want him to drop such a fast time which will make it harder to show great improvement at NAU.
Not sure what your source is, I think top he could do is low 13:30s or may 13:29. When is this run supposed to happen?
Don't worry. He has done sub 13:20 workouts. He could drop a 13:15 if allowed to but should keep some in the tank for a surprise next spring and then olymlic trials.

They are clearly giving his coach crap, not Nico.
That workout looks like a great marker during a season with no races. The 3k looks like a little faster then his 5k race pace . Then he took who knows how long and did 8x400m.
It’s a good marker workout. I think you people forget he is one of the best HS distance runners ever and has no track season die to covid - 19. This would be a good workout to split up the season.

Clearly they did do one with Jace. Also they were open to Nico doing the mile if had not been pacing for the 3200. At this point in June, not sure the point. Honestly for Nico I worry about his longevity and risk of injuries. His training is something at the level of college or elite athletes and that is quite a toll. The no track season might have been a blessing.
I think there's a chance you may see him make a run at a time trial or a record since it appears his training is working towards something like that.
If he's not going to run a time trial or some type of race for the rest of the summer, Nico's workouts should be more about building a base and getting ready for the longer runs he's going to be doing at NAU this fall. I know some of the NAU guys are already up in the 90 miles per week range and it's early June.

College/pro level training in high school worked out pretty well for Rupp.
On the other hand, not so well for Mary Cain.
Probably would have worked out for Lukas Verzbikas if he hadn't had his bike accident and almost lost the ability to even walk again.
Worked out pretty well for Alan Webb.
Maybe would have worked for Amber Trotter if it wasnt coupled with an eating disorder, and she was forced to make the very difficult choice to quit running at 18 or probably die from it.
Didnt work out well for German Fernandez.
Its working out just fine for the Ingebritzens.
So yeah, it's a mixed bag. It always is a mixed bag at the very top. You dont know how it's going to go until you get there.

He's obviously a workout hero and is maybe lying here (It's pretty obvious he's a workout hero considering his mile-800 workout before his 3k).
I think he underperformed a lot in races compared to his workouts, it's just not obvious to you because he's REALLY good and he wins everything, but remember that even if you're the best, you can be a workout hero. I don't think that's an healthy thing to give race effort in a workout each week but he can do whatever he wants, I just hope that's not his coach who is pushing him to hit such times in workout.
Just consider that : Jimmy Gressier (3:37 1500, 13:18 European road 5k record and 27:43 10k so obviously a world ahead of Nico)
he ran a 3k time trial to raise money for hospitals, it was almost all out (lying on the ground after) and he only ran 8:13, so I don't think that's healthy for Nico to run 10s faster in a WORKOUT, and even if you suppose he's in sub4 mile and 13:30 5000 shape

What are you talking about? German Fernadez ran about 60-65 mpw and LV about 50 with some cross-training.
What exactly, is so different about Young's training compared to other top HS runners? Would the other runners want to do the same thing so they could win NXN, too?

Agreed. I keep seeing this tool post passive aggressively to Nico and his coach.
in a Milesplit and runnerspace interviews they say he started coaching at Newbury Park during outdoor track the semester before Nico arrived. So he started Newbury Park spring of 2016 and his first time coaching cross country at Newbury Park was Nico’s freshman year in the fall of 2017. Nico’s freshman year.
Yes you are correct he developed one of the best HS runners of all time, but it was 4 years. Also developed one of the best programs of all time in 4 years.
No one is saying Nico can run 13:15 except you because you obviously have a problem with them and are extremely bitter.
