Plus, Nico's 3200 / 5000 and XC times are on par with plenty of guys that placed in the T10 as true freshman--Cheserek (1st), Goucher (2nd), Ritz (4th), etc.
I think he could place very highly in the fall if they actually run XC.
His times are right there with them, but Goucher and Ritz were a different era. Way less depth.
Not really fair to compare any incoming freshman with Ches.
Yeah, Goucher and Ritz had a real walk in the park their freshman years...
As a freshman in 1994, Goucher got 2nd to Martin Keino and beat Kevin Sullivan, Alan Culpepper, and Meb K among others.
In 2001, Ritz got 4th behind a Kenyan, Jorge Torres and Allistair Craig, and beat out Luke Watson, Ryan Shay, Donald Sage, Matt Tegenkamp, Alan Webb, and Daniel Lincoln.
At the top end, there were plenty of strong XC runners in the bad old days of the late 90s and early 00s. Goucher and Ritz were both exceptional XC performers who would have placed highly in any era.
As for NY, let the kid run and see how he does.
