From 13-21 years old (22 now), I focused mainly on lifting weights (with some cardio sprinkled in) and gaining weight. I went from 120lbs-230lbs at 6'0. Around January 2019, I took up running. I worked my way up to doing 40-50 mile weeks by November 2019 and was weighing in at 185lbs. I followed various running plans, that I think were well programmed. Recently, I was doing Pftizingers 45-55 MPW plan before a bunch of injuries took there toll on me.
Even after building an aerobic base, I never felt like a strong runner. My 5k time did go from 27 minutes-22 minutes but I felt like that was mainly due to weight loss. I plateaued around 22 minutes for many months. Anytime I would take more than a week off, my 5k time would drop to 24 minutes. I've also felt very injury prone.
I understand that I have to be patient in this journey and that I will never be at the level of a college XC runner but how many more years of training do I have to do where I feel like a strong runner? I'd really like to get to the point where I can do a 7:30 pace for my long runs and an 18 minute 5k is something I can pull off, even after 2 weeks off from running.
In lifting, it seems a bit different. You can hop on a well written powerlifting program and be stronger than 75% of people at the gym in one year. But with running, despite how good the programming I'm doing is, I still have people that barely even train (maybe 10 miles a week) outrun me with ease. Maybe these people had a strong running base from doing XC or running sports when they were younger, idk.
