How are the decisions to cut programs reached? I understand that the university projects a budget of X, and advises departments accordingly. However, it doesn't seem like the university consults outside sources before pulling the plug. Why not reach out to the alumni base and student-athletes first?
"Hey guys, we're unable to fund the program next year. We would need X dollars to sponsor it next year. Before we cut it, would anyone like to make a tax free charitable contribution to keep it going? We need the pledges within two weeks, or the sport is getting axed."
