I learned in high school that starting with the 1880 Japanese immigration to the USA, the Japanese were severely hated and despised on the West Coast since the Japanese Government provided political and social support, ensuring great success in farming and fishing enterprises. Many Japanese had new cars and nice clothes in the middle of the Great Depression as a result of their hard work.
Jim Crow discrimination barred Japanese from restaurants, movie theaters, and public places. Curfews against Japanese in Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco forced Japanese to hide at dusk to escape police sweeps. The Japanese Government filed protest after protest in Washington, D.C. for decades and decades to no avail.
