The Woodlands? I’m wondering about teams that have historically thrived on miserable conditions, in the south obviously.

NAU is in Arizona, the hottest state in the US.

Humid, google it.
Also high altitude areas makes it quite cooler. Thus why East Africans in the Rift Valley run in jackets and pants despite being near the equator. In contrast low lying desert places like badwater are extremely hot.
Yeah, Woodlands is the one that sticks out.
Houston is a tough climate for a distance runner.
what kind of team? SEC dominates track. Heat is a positive for more events than a negative.
Florida and Florida State usually have good distance teams

I agree with SEC.
Arkansas is pretty warm and humid and they’re competitive. Old Miss also, with Engels obviously. finished what, 3rd?
Yep, has to be Florida State or Old Miss.
Ole Miss... All day. Humidity is called the poor man's altitude training for a reason.

Thanks, all. I was thinking more high school than college, but this is a good list.
...I remember an article in Running Times once on the Woodlands team. That humidity sounded rough.

sure, but don't they have woodlands to train in - you know trails and shade?
Univ of Arkansas has some mild success in a hot and humid climate.
It doesn't matter. SEC is likely to cut XC and track to save football.

Well, yeah, but shade doesn't matter when it's 90 with a dewpoint of 65 by 8 am.

Maybe for shorter events but not anything longer than say 2,600.
Chris Solinsky would tell you: University of Florida. Gainesville is more humid and miserable than Tallahassee, so please cease all discussion of FSU. Don't forget that Shorter, Bacheler, and Liquori all thrived by training in G'ville.
Yeah, if we're talking heat and humidity during cross country season, there's a huge difference between Gainesville/University of Florida and everything south of there, and the rest of the country. Mississippi is humid, but they get dressed up to go to football games in October. October in Central Florida produces worse dew points than the worst summer weather anywhere else in the country.
So that being said, I'd argue that no place with really warm and humid XC weather has a good XC team. I can think of all of them in Florida, and they're all a hot mess (no pun intended).
Corpus Christi is pretty humid but A&M Corpus isn’t a top program
