Which team’s are vulnerable and why so?
Which team’s are vulnerable and why so?
I would think many mid majors are vulnerable. Universities have lost and will lose lots of revenue from no form and room fees. If I was a school President I would come knocking on door of AD at any school where sports generate no revenue. Think MAC Type leagues
Rutgers should - total waste of a program
Along those lines so is this the XC season (2020) where Manhattan makes the podium at NCAA Champs? Wasn't everyone saying now that Centro Sr was coaching there they would be a powerhouse? Hmm well THAT has not happened. Did they even run at Regionals last year?
My assumption would also be power 5 schools in current budget deficits with low revenue from Football and Basketball.
it seems non power5 D1 schools football programs (MAC) are money sinks
what are the challenges that nonfootball conferences face?
Is the Big East or Missouri Valley in better shape than say the MAC b/c they don;t have to support football programs?
Just to be clear. ALL schools are experiencing financial hits (probably around 20-25% of usual yearly funding. Unfortunately, I think some schools used this pandemic as an excuse to prematurely cut programs. I feel like schools like CMU could have done better by simply eliminating indoor track instead of both. They'd be in a much better situation having to petition the MAC than they are now, petitioning the NCAA to allow them to stay in the FBS. It definitely seems apparent that all of the football school experience a bigger struggle staying afloat, with lack of donations, games, etc.
A lot of these football schools already operate at a deficit, but schools that are able to sustain themselves without a football program will have an advantage right off the bat since all they really missed this year was the march madness tournament.
Here's the thing that I think people get distracted from:
Schools are not going to cut football. They aren't. It HAS happened a handful of times, but no school in their right might would remove their only potential source of profit. The answer, my friends, is baseball. Baseball has the same amount of max scholarships that track does basically, and the budget is nearly triple for the average school. Baseball in the collegiate system is essentially a joke most years unless you're good enough to make the tourney. They are likely as expensive as the average basketball program. Runners, I know since high school you've been conditioned to wage war on football, but the war is really with baseball.
Men's soccer is the next to go.
Too international
And the coaches are pushing for a calendar that mimics the European soccer calendar.
ADs will decide soccer isn't worth the trouble.
would also think XC will continue to be a target simply because at some schools how much do they race? Why should a school put that one into a program that will go to the line 2 maybe 3 times during a seaon
If you have seen the list of cut programs ( not just track) then tennis especially men is the most vulnerable sport right now. Low numbers and lots of internationals. If you take out the schools that shut down then tennis makes up close to 40% of all the teams cut so far. Not a good time to be a tennis coach.
Xavier and Creighton in the Big East. Siena in the Maac.

The Ducks, because Phil Knight has had it with these young whippersnappers.
"Any athlete born after 1993 can't run.. All they know is Flotrack, charge they phone, stretch, be injured, eat RunGum and lie" - Phil Knight

Which programs only race 2 times a season? Please list them.
The Big East is Cross Country, No teams will be cut in that conference

Yes they are, not being solely committed to football probably saves the Big East conference
Indoor and outdoor full teams are expensive to sponsor. Due to Title 9 and universities not wanting to cut football, men’s programs are at risk. There are a few D1 programs who have not invested in an on campus track facility. Look for those programs to cut men’s indoor and outdoor and possibly women’s as well and just go with a women’s cross country team (inexpensive) and require the 1 coach to have a large roster
In the future there were be 9-15 sports for women at each university and but 3 for men - football, basketball, and baseball. The day will be here before you know it. I envision 200 man football rosters allowed with 12th stringers who don't even get to practice with the 5th string and down.

Sadly tennis is the best entertainment value in all of college sports. Decently high standard across all levels.

The number of football scholarships is what I dont understand.
Why is there 85 full rides to football when an NFL roster has 53? I realize's there's no free agency so if guys get hurt you need a few extra reserves but 85 seems like overkill
