It won’t take 3 years. It will be for the next 3 years. Next year’s team will be better than this past year’s team. In 3 years it will be by far and away the best team in high school XC history. I’d guarantee it’s the best group of 4 9th graders in history by a wide margin.
In 3 years, we'll probably be seeing one of the most dominant team wins in NXN in history.
Mile and 3 mile times for some of Newbury Park's freshmen:
Leo Young: 4:16, 14:58
Aaron Sahlman: 4:17, 15:36
Lex Young: 4:21, 14:37
Hector Martinez (transferred during the track season): 15:32
Aaron Cantu: 15:49
Martinez ran a 15:24 at Woodbridge.
But still, this is probably the most solid group of top 5 freshmen on a team I have ever seen.
But only time will tell how they will do senior year. Hopefully they don’t become constantly injured like Eli Krahn from Stillwater MN did almost his entire high school career after setting the freshman national 1600 record in 2013.
Great Oak has a solid group of freshman too, 2 of which are in the Cortes family. Although it’s not comparable to those 5 freshman at Newbury Park. GO always has guys who make big jumps from year to year.
Newbury Park could be the first boys team to 4-peat at NXN. Or if the entire season gets canceled next year, they could be the first boys team to three-peat (win the second and third NXN meet in a row by winning in 2021 and 2022), something the Loudoun Valley was going for but did not have enough to do.
