Governors rushed to confine everyone in low-risk groups, yet failed to protect nursing homes, the one group needing strict isolation and testing from day one. Due to that inexplicable error, nursing home residents constitute most of the deaths in many states and more than a third nationwide. The coming projection uptick is not a cause for fear or panic. It only reinforces the need for new policies targeted to specifically protect that clearly defined high-risk group.
I see the 1/3 of deaths nationwide in nursing homes mentioned back in the 5/9 article but lately I have been reading/hearing higher numbers. Recent articles have mention 50% or more death in Europe occurred at nursing homes. If the real numbers get reported in the USA I expect at least 50% to 75% of deaths will be from long term care facilities including nursing homes and assisted living facilities. I thought I heard Dr. Birx say 75% in today's press conference but it may have been another press conference this week.
From the below article:
New data released by the Ohio Department of Health says at least 1,247 patients of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities have died with coronavirus, representing about 70% of known COVID-19 deaths in the state.
Overall, the state reported Wednesday a total of 1,781 Ohioans are known to have died with coronavirus. Of these, 53% were at least 80 years old and another 25% in their 70s.

Deaths from the new coronavirus (COVID-19) have soared in U.S. nursing homes, a trend that some advocates say reflects society’s disdain for the elderly.
“The nursing homes have been ground zero for the coronavirus pandemic” said Jim Towey, founder and CEO of the group Aging with Dignity.
Towey warned of a “disturbing undercurrent” in the conversation about the high occurrence of COVID deaths among the elderly, one which downplays the numbers because of the age of the patients and their supposed proximity to death.
