Which of the two marathons has a better chance of happening?
I signed up for both, but I think I will have to pick one.

At this point, I seriously doubt we will have mass participation marathons until Fall of 2021.
I've reached out to a few races that are still on the calendar to get added to the fields. The responses I've gotten were either crickets, or the elite coordinators I know told me the race as a whole would be announcing its cancellation in the next week, month, etc.
Whether you run CIM or not, it was an expensive plane ticket for a boring race. Sure it went off without a hitch and had great course support. I would have rather raced on the east coast for that. I expect the premium paid to give me a little extra race premium. Didn’t happen. Sacramento is quite the sleepy capital.
lol I 'm from the Bay Area.

Honolulu. Hawaii has had only one new case of covid-19 today, their 641st total. Sac had 5 new cases so far today for 1250 thus far. Houston had 2 new cases today. If I had to guess I'd say Houston is more likely to go off than CIM at this point just based on the above. The question is going to be if any of these places allow events to go off. I
What I do know is CA will not go into phase 4 unless there is a vaccine. Reason I'm asking because I want to focus on one marathon and want to pick the one that's more likely to happen. I think Houston will likely happen than CIM, but you never know because CIM could happen or both CIM and Houston get canceled.
I'm probably the only person with this view, but I would imagine both races happen as scheduled.
I think we might get back to normal sooner than we all think. States are already starting to open. Gyms are opening their doors. Everyone wants to get back to work. The feds and state governors can't shut everyone/everything down forever.
As I always say, it's better to be an optimist and proven wrong than to be a pessimist and proven right.
I'm a optimistic too. I'm hoping Oxford's vaccine works. I agree with you. I was surprised that sports without fans will be coming back to CA , especially when Gov. Newsom said at one point that it wouldn't happen. I'm also surprised that phase 3 will be opening in a few weeks in CA. Unfortunately, I live in Santa Clara County so that won't happen until July.
However, everyone is worried about 2nd wave coming back. I also think Gov. Newsom is very serious about no mass events until there s a vaccine.

Thanks for reminder. I forgot Newsome mentioned that. Unless we come up with a miracle treatment, you can skip CIM this year. Vaccine is still very far off.
That's why we got to hope that Oxford's vaccine works.

I think Newsome may have to backtrack on that. I reached out to friends who put on the CIM. They are planning as if the event is going to happen right now.
I think for the CIM there is a real risk our state shuts it down while Houston has the benefit of the texas government and is less likely to face state interference. Although if I was gambling on it, right now I would place my bet on it being more likely neither happen than even 1 of 2.

Which one is not in CA?
Houston said they are planning it as it will happen. They will make changes to the race in order for everyone to be safe. I got this info from the newsletter they sent by email.
Anyone have any updated insight or opinion on this? I’m in exact same situation as OP lol...plus the last few weeks haven’t been so good COVID-19 wise ?
Neither. Both will be cancelled.

I have reached out to elite coordinators of both races to get in the fields. I have close connection with several people at CIM since my high school coach founded the race and directed until a few years back. They are planning like the race will happen. But at this point living in California I see 0 chance the race happens. Newsome has moved the goalposts so much on the virus there is no way this mass gathering will be allowed given were shutting back down because cases have risen as we increased testing despite hospitalizations being level. He has decided spread of the virus is not acceptable so no way a race through the state capital finishing by the capital happens.
I am more optimistic for Houston since Texas is red state but recent events do not give me confidence. Although Houston could be well on their way to herd immunity. I see a less one in three chance it happens now.
Houston won't reach herd immunity this year or next. No major metro will. Look at the population. A more likely scenario is that as hospitals are overwhelmed, restrictions are put in place and events cancelled further out. Looking at Houston's numbers and its among the marathons I'd least count on running. I certainly wouldn't be making plans yet. Now all this could change. The city could lockdown and stop the spread, making the event more likely to be held. A couple month lockdown in the next few months, before Houston decides to make a decision could drop the numbers to the point it could be held. Its up to you if you see that happening in Texas.
Neither will happen.
But it did get me thinking about which race I liked better. They are both awesome races but completely different courses etc. I was also lucky and had perfect running weather for each.
I'm hoping that the Santa Rosa marathon can happen. It's rescheduled for late November and is much smaller than CIM or Houston.

What premium did you pay for the race and what did you expect to receive? Registration is like $100 and you get a shuttle to the start and a cold beer at the finish. Seems fair
seriously though, I'd like to hear what your expectations were so that SRA (my employer) can provide a better experience in the future.
