16 weeks at 40-55mpw should be enough to get you that 18:36 5k.
I ran a faster 5k with 40mwp but every runner is different

+1
We had a kid run 15 flat on 35 MPW last year. Talent beats training.

That's not the point here. Even with average and well below average talent, a person could run 18:30 on 16 weeks of 40-55 mpw with multiple workouts with already sub 20 capability and history as athlete.

Definitely. What was your previous PR before the 16 weeks of training for the 19:58? I wouldn't be surprised if you ran 18:36 after the next 16 weeks.
Like others said, you don't need 55 mpw, but if you can handle 55 without injury and without too much fatigue, then go for it. Back down the mileage if you have trouble in your workouts.
I sure hope you can. I can do it on less at 50.
Yeah, you could run it off of 20 miles a week if you did it right.

You should definitely be able to.
55 mpw is probably 15 to 20 miles more than I ran my freshman year, and I managed a 18:51; the next year on about the same mileage I made it down to 18:13.

Absolutely, my 17 yo son ran an 18:50 5k last summer and he's never run more than 20 miles/week in his life.
Is the OP saying he is raising his mileage to 55 mpw and asking if that will get him down to 18:30 from 19:XX ?
Why hasn't anyone asked him what his previous mileage was? Isn't that relevant?

Good Post!
My mileage was 25-30 when I ran 19:58, and I've upped it to 55 over 5 weeks. I have 11 weeks left in my training program (it's Pete Magill's), and I'm running a time trial at the end of it as well as in 3 weeks.
Yeah, you can definitely do it. It starts to get harder & harder once you get under 18:00. I think more mileage & gradually getting in faster workouts gets you there.
Yea u can considering your increase in mileage - out of curiosity, why 18:36? Seems like an arbitrary number, usually people go for xx:00 or xx:30 goals

I'm guessing because it's then an average of <6 pace? I think along those lines too.

HITHEREYOU is right
Im going for a sub 6 pace, so kind of an xx:00 goal
Don't have much useful information to add because I'm not qualified enough. But I am in ta similar boat. been running for ~3 years. Decided to try the half marathon training plan from pfitzinger to train for a spring half. Ran a 5k TT instead of the one of the 10 k tune up races and ended up with a 19:50. Since all races including mine are obviously cancelled, I also want to work my 5k pace down to 6 min pace. One glaring difference is I already ended up with a few 50 mile weeks during the half training. Now with my relative lack of experience, I'm not sure how to keep building on it and add new stimulus while continuing to do some base building.
Keep updating this thread. I'm curious to follow your progress and hopefully learn from it.
You probably can. I ran an 18:36 as a pr in xc this past fall. Before the summer I was a 6 flat in the mile and 23:30 5k guy. I ran about 40-45 mpw over the summer with a few workouts for 12sih weeks than had the season with 30-35 mpw and harder workouts. I dont have a ton of talent and was slower than you when I started, so it should be possible.
You should be faster than that for the time trial. I ran a 21:0X freshman year and 17:31 sophomore year off of 25-30 mpw doing 5 days a week and inconsistent training. I think with that quality and volume of training you should be able to go under 18 easily :).
