Probably just not used to hurting that bad. At least it's over quick (in real time, feels like forever).

It's in line with his 68s 400m speed. It's actually quite amazing that he can hold 81% of his 400m speed in a 10k TT, that's world class! Incredibly well developed endurance. I can probably only hold that % of 400m speed for a mile, at best.

It’s really strange. It’s almost as if running that TT with Mrs. Stone completely knocked all of the pains and aches out of my body. I haven’t physically/mechanically felt this good since February. Now it’s just a matter of training myself aerobically back into the same shape I was then.
I think Pete Magill (might be someone else) has written about this - the idea being that a really long, relatively slow run can actually reset the body.
As for me...

I tweaked _something_ this week on Wednesday resulting in some left foot pain that caused me to shut stuff down. The foot thing is weird - it's on the outside rear of the heel as well as underneath. It's not peroneal tendonitis - I can evert that foot against resistance easily and without pain. It's not plantar faciitis either - the pain isn't in the right place, it doesn't improve as I walk on it, and the sole of the foot isn't tight at all. And sleeping in the strasbourg sock (my reliable standby for plantar fasciitis) results in the foot burning along the outside after a few hours.
We're pretty sure this is nerve pain (sural nerve) - it's burning, moves around, flares when I sit on a couch, hurts more when I wear shoes than when barefoot. And the pain in my foot syncs with pain in my hip or hamstring on that side, plus a feeling of tightness in that leg. Plus, the pain locations are in the right place for pain from the sural nerve and/or s1 in the spine. I saw a chiro on Saturday and then again this morning who adjusted my left SI joint, did some ART on my piriformis, and grastoned behind my left knee, and that helped a lot. Seems like the nerve is entrapped in my calf, as well as possibly another location.
Just frustrating - I know from past bouts with this sort of thing that it clears up much quicker when I stay active in some form. But....I don't want to walk or run on it, since it's sore enough to throw off my gait, and I don't have any other aerobic cross training options. The pools are still closed, and even if I had access to a bike, I'd be worried that might make stuff worse.

xperirunner- i forgot to reply last week. im not sure which of those marathons would be more likely to happen. maybe Houston? the whole busing to the start at Cal Intl seems potentially problematic, even though it’s quite a bit smaller field than that combined start of Houston Half and Marathon. I don’t see that state of California allowing large marathons again anytime soon, although LA Marathon somehow happened.
What region of the country are you in? I’ve heard of some other, much smaller, marathons shaping up
CIM also has 'worry-free' registration ongoing
https://runsra.org/california-international-marathon/registration/#et_pb_accordion_item_0Agree that California is far away from letting a marathon be organized.
I'm from the Bay Area. I signed up for both CIM and Houston (Marathon). I think I will have to pick one.
-I believe for sure I will have to TT until October. I don't think a 10 mile race in Sacramento is happening in September.
-CA is slowly opening up in other NorCal regions, but Bay Area, especially when Santa Clara county isn't opening at all. It's why I don't think RNR SJ will happen, but hoping Urban Cow Half in Sacramento will happen.
-I did sign up for Indiana Monumental Half. I'm thinking of doing RNR San Antonio Half if no CIM.
-Hopes are on Moderna and Oxford.
- Thinking of 11 week base starting June 1st followed by almost 16 weeks of marathon training if CIM happens and 22 weeks of marathon training if Houston happens.
Kind of off-topic but I have been looking into masters track. Anyone have any experience running masters world track championships? The next outdoor champs is in 2022 in Sweden. It looks like the sub 15:08 made the podium for the 35-40 age group in 2018.
Seems like this might be kind of an interesting goal for those of us already at (or rapidly approaching) old fart status.
Funny you bring it up, HHW. My older brother invited me to go run masters nats with him next year. Realizing 35 is a masters in T&F is kinda depressing, but it sounds like a good time. Decent chance I'll be running it.
Stone - looking forward to following along with your new plan. What are your goals for next year assuming this slower, more consistent approach works out for you?
HHW - great week and I'm late to the party but congrats on the baby. I don't know how any of you with children can make it all work. All this talk on stepping stones makes me consider giving it a whirl this weekend. I'm guessing one uses date MP rather than goal MP?
RRR - I've never done well in the heat but now that I'm still fighting that "bigger guy" syndrome it's brutal
IB - nice progression! I tried running one Saturday as well. My results were a bit different.
ST - super solid week. What do you consider fat?
Sub 6 - "Get off my lawn!" I've been waiting to get yelled at for lack of a mask. I did get yelled at for running in the road (20mph zone) next to our canal trail by two old birds. Apparently it was too much for them to move their car two feet further to the center line so they felt the need to stop and yell at me.
My week
M - 42, 6'1, not fat but not skinny
Goal - Santa Rosa 8/30 (won't happen but I want wine)
M- am 5 easy, pm 7 easy
T - 7 at 90% mp
W - 6 easy
T - 5.5 w/ 10x400 @5k (60s jog)
F - 5 easy
S - 12 as progression to 95%GMP (10 down to 6:55)
S - 4.5 moderate with some pickups
Total 52
Felt a bit run down on Monday and Tuesday's effort was too much so decided to listen to the aches and make it a down week.
Thursday's 400s were of course on the road and GPS guided, tried keeping them around 5:40 pace.
Saturday was meant to be a long run of 15ish miles progressing down to around 90-95% of goal MP. Got out fairly early to beat the heat and was clicking along good, feeling really great until about mile 6.5 when out of nowhere I was steamrolled by a woman on a cruiser bike. Sent me for a couple somersaults but I wasn't really injured, however, because she was wearing flipflops she pretty much removed all the skin from the front of her big toe. No need to assign blame, just a perfect storm of a busy canal path and stuff happens. We had to go about another half mile to hit the road and I waited with her until her friend could take her to urgent care which ended up being about 35 minutes on the side of the road. By that time all motivation was gone and the heat was now coming on strong so I cut it short. Not a wasted effort but not exactly the morning I was looking for.
Where/when is it?
Sacramento. Date TBD, site just says late July/early August.
They still have 2020 listed on the schedule for July 9-12 in North Carolina. I imagine that will get canceled, though.

Do I get to use my downhill mile time?
Four pages in a day and a half!
You'd think it was racing season.
Exceptional work by all of you out there. Truly inspiring!
I know you would never reduce yourself to that level.
stat- for July 4 actually you must now run the mile entirely uphill (preferably mountain) to handicap for the rest of us. or “them” rather- I’m not running a mile, that’d be too depressing.
Sacramento in July/August sounds terrible. I was looking at running at the Toronto event this year before it was torpedoed by covid.

2020 USATF Masters Outdoor Championships were canceled.

I was really shocked when I checked in.
It's good to see this thread thriving in the absence of racing.
HHW - Decathlon baby!
Lol. I would have been an excellent decathelete except for the fact that I have never successfully completely a pull up or bench pressed my body weight more than a few times. I have t-Rex arms.
