Correct — we’re living in a crazy time. The government and media created a mass hysteria that was completely unreasonable and also cruel. They are now trying to undo the extremely costly hysteria with things like bandannas on faces. Really seems like a TSA moment — a bit of theater, a bit of symbolism — Anything so that officials aren’t blamed for deaths in public.
Only problem with that is that vaccine timelines are quite uncertain (and may never happen at all) and so if transmissions in healthy populations are too limited, life doesn’t only stay rough for those people, but it remains even more difficult for the elderly folks that the government says it is trying to protect.
Even if this were 100x the danger of flu, the resources wasted in its containment (in comparison to flu or any other global health concern) have been orders of magnitude higher than that.
I’ve yet to see anyone talk about how this meshed with SVL data from other fields and situations. Back of napkin calculations suggest we’re overpaying by a wide margin. One would think managers would be bringing in economists and data scientists to figure this out and explain it to people. Instead the bring in doctors and infectious disease specialists who understand maybe 20% of the equation, if we’re lucky.
