So I've been seeing a bunch of websites talking about a recent Ted Ginn Jr statement to TMZ.
TMZ wrote:
"Well I ran against Usain Bolt. I got him when we was in the 12th grade. All of the top guys that won in the Olympics between 2004 until now, I basically had a chance to race them guys in high school," Ginn said.
When asked to confirm that he indeed defeated Bolt – who is generally regarded as the fastest human being alive – Ginn was quick with his response.
"Yeah. I got that. You can go look that up," he said.
Ginn said to look it up. So I've tried - unsuccessfully. I did find another story from 2016 where he told ESPN he beat Bolt in a relay.
ESPN wrote:
That doesn't mean Ginn doesn't sometimes fantasize about the time he beat Bolt, who is 16 months younger, in the 4x100 relays.
"He was the anchor, and I was the second leg," Ginn said. "I opened up and gave us that lead that he couldn't get back. So, you know, man, I've done run against the best of the best.
So if you combine those two quotes, Ginn is claiming he beat Bolt during Ginn's senior year of HS which was 2004. I can't find any evidence of that. Tilastapaja lists no relays for Bolt in 2004 0 just 200s with a 19.91 sb. Bolt didn't run World Juniors that year - he ran in the Olympics.
In 2002, Bolt did run a leg on Jamaica's silver medal winning 4 x 100 team that lost to the US but Wikipedia doesn't list Ginn as being on the team (but maybe it happened in the prelim? Were there even prelims) and that would have been Ginn's sophomore year of HS.
So did Ginn ever beat Bolt? I don't doubt that Ginn was a world-class sprint prospect. I just am not sure he ever raced Bolt but don't know why he'd just make this up.
