Russia has trading partners. Sanctions cannot truly damage Russia. Sanctions lack the reach to tank Russia's economy because sanctions do not block its trade. Russia's trading volume with its partners has increased to offset losses. They have side stepped this issue.
The only way Russia will "pay the price for decades" is if it sours its own trade with its own trading partners. That is up to Russia, not america. Russia dictates its financial future and nobody else.
The best you can hope for is for Russia to ruin its own trade with its partners or for Russia's energy game completely to dry up.
