Hitler was gambling that after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor that Japan would return in kind a declaration of war against the Soviet Union. Therefore helping Germany out with its war with the USSR. The Germans and Japanese had a mutual defense treaty. Since Japan attacked American forces first, the treaty Germany had with Japan did not come into play. However, Hitler must have never gotten that memo. That was his biggest blunder of the war.

And Japan wasn't having any of that. They knew that their war was a regional war, not a war of world wide conquest. They also knew if the USA and Allies weren't defeated within six months to a year their goose was cooked.

As an aside, Stalin and Roosevelt made an agreement during one of their summits, that six months after the war in Europe was concluded, the USSR would declare war on Japan and help the Pacific Allies end that war. Stalin kept his word. In fact he kept his word so well, that for two weeks after Japan surrendered the Soviets continued fighting. LOL the Soviet Union.
