Read what I wrote!!!! You have a great knowledge of the past. Please post the last six years of Dellinger compared with the first 6 years of Smith. I think that even the first year of Smith not be counted because he had none of his own guys in their and it time to rebuild the program.

I admitted that Bowerman is a legend and did a great job. He also was not limited to the few scholarships that Smith has been limited too. He did not have oregon legends attacking him becuase he did not kowtow to them but instead did what he thought was best for his athletes.

Would Rupp have gone to Oregon if ALSAL had not been in his ear spreading poison? Would Mcgrath have left. Would the Basketball player have stayed out for the track team if Nike wasn't using the new basketball arena as leverige?

When UO wins the pac ten this year will Smith get the credit he deserves?

If Rupp joins the Team is there anyone who REALLY believes that he is NCAA eligible?

What the hell? Oregon was a power in T&F and XC until 92 and then just XC. Now Oregon is only a T&F power.

I do have a problem with the way Smith ran his runners at home meets, but he is not entirely to blame for that. The Stanford time trial meets rose on Dellinger's watch, not Smith's.

That is true that things were suffering after 1992 but that is why Smith was brought in to revitalize the program, including the meets. If Bill Moos' did not state that then the person at fault for this mess is Bill Moos

You all might want to move out west and get off your midwest band wagon for finding another coach. Pat Tyson is an excellent choice as is Matt McGuirk at Willamette University or Kelly Sullivan the new Oregon State women's coach. It seems that many of you come from schools which could never allow you to understand yet appreciate the tradition and bond the Men of Oregon have regardless of sprinter, field event or distance runner. We all pride ourselves on what we did while there and what was done before and after us. This does not end with the University or track team. For us it encompasses the city of Eugene and the state of Oregon and when these elements are not being considered or respected by the staff or a particular coach it is unacceptable and things need to change. Oregon has a deep and successful history in the distances and this needs to be considered and the fire re-lit. I am confident that the next coach at Oregon will take all these points into consideration and surround him or herself with the people who will allow it to happen. Martin Smith is not a bad coach but he chose the wrong way to go about embracing Track Town USA!

You might want to take a look at the success those boys had under Dellinger and then take a look at how at least Humke was pushed aside as Martin did not like him. You do not come into a program and tell everyone it is my way or the highway you work with the athletes to accomplish the goals they are capable of reaching. Humke had tallent and could have applied himself better but he also could have had a little help from Smith.

I have been coached by Martin Smith as well as Pat Tyson. I've also been coached by Vin Lanana and Bill Dellinger. I personally think Pat Tyson would be a great coach at Oregon. He has the burning desire to make Oregon great. Any runner who has ever dealt with him can feel the opportunities for success pouring out.

Both Pat and Vin have some things that Smith does not. Self confidence, the desire to motivate young athletes, and the ability to help them as people. They give people confidence, teach them to be tough, and make them WANT to run.

Smith destroys young minds, and makes a few good runners, who arguably aren't even reaching their potential.

I feel sorry for all the young runners who had their careers cut short or driven into the ground do to Smith. I feel even more sorry for the individuals who lost a part of themselves in Smiths behind doors militaristic approach to coaching. Breaking people down is an outdated tactic reserved only for training soldiers for war.

Life and sport are not war. They just aren't.

I (and not I alone) truly support this change, not just to see Oregon head in a better direction. Perhaps more importantly to see great young athletes achieving there best, and feeling good about it.

This is not meant to be a bash, it is really an exultation. This is a great oppurtunity for young runners, and the University of Oregon.

Oregon fans/alum need to get their heads out of their asses- its no longer 1972, stop living in the past. If you think you're ever going to win a track championship with just distance runners think again. The best track programs are all moving towards a more balanced program. Look at Arkansas- they are known for their distance, but they now have sprinters and jumpers that are just as competetive as their distance team. I guess Oregon would rather be a program like Colorado- great at cross, and then maybe 5-10 points at nationals in track if they're lucky

Whether you like Martin or not, I still say that this whole situation is both unbelievable and unacceptable. I mean, the team finishes 6th in the nation in indoor track and the guy is shown the door! Aside from those who committed obvious violations, when have you ever heard of a coach getting asked to resign after finishing that high?

It's all very disturbing to me that the alumni and possibly a shoe company could have this much power over the AD's.

I say, let Salazar be the coach and he can see how easy it is to have an NCAA championship distance program! And as far as Pat Tyson, he may be a great guy and a great H.S. coach but trying to win at the collegiate level is a whole different thing. Good luck!
